Bonjour, Hola, 你好, Salve!
On Wednesday, March 27th during our Global Language Chapel service, middlers beautifully showcased the many languages spoken within our own community.
After an opening from Head of School Jeff Zemsky, Devon Berkove ’24 read Psalm 100 in Hebrew and Sofia Ettle ’23 read the Lord’s Prayer in German. After the singing of “We Are Marching in the Light of God” together, our Middle School students took turns reading the school prayer in the languages they are learning in school: Chinese, Latin, French and Spanish. The responsive reading, 1 Corinthians 12, was read by Tamera Maignan ’24 in Creole, Jolie Eyvazzadeh ’25 in Persian, and Alex Perrucci ’24 in Italian. Valia Tsirukis ’24 read Romans 12: 10,12-18 in German, followed by a reading of 1 John 4 by Hanning Yan ’25 and Ryan Cheng ’24 in Chinese.
During the chapel meditation, Middle School Spanish teacher Mrs. Kelton shared her experiences traveling to places all over the world through photographs.
She stated, “After visiting and enjoying all these places, I have come to the realization the most important similarity that they all have in common is the people. People are the ones who make all these places incredible, and throughout the world, they have many things in common. But we have one difference: the language. Should this be a reason to not visit other places? Absolutely not. For me, part of getting ready to visit a country is to learn some very basic words that will help me move around and ask for help. It is an opportunity to learn from others and push myself to try something different. Don’t be afraid, get ready and go.”
Our Benediction featured a reading of Isaiah 55:12 by Oliver Pervizpour ’25 in Hebrew and Qur’an Surah 5:16 by Miriam Mira ’25 in Arabic.
To conclude the service, Gabby Cruz ’25 interpreted the last hymn, “Spirit of the Living God,” in American Sign Language.
Thank you to all of our student readers, Rev. Jennifer Nichols, our talented student musicians led by Mr. Nathan Diehl, and Mrs. Kelton for making this service incredibly special.
