Sixth-grader Gianna Guarasi traveled to the Pennsylvania State Museum on Friday, April 6th in Harrisburg to compete in the National Geographic Pennsylvania State Geography Bee. Gianna won first place at our middle school geography bee back in January 2018. Gianna also completed an online National Geographic Bee test in early-February 2018. She was one of the 103 students to score high enough to qualify as a contestant in the Pennsylvania State Geography Bee.
In Harrisburg last Friday, she competed against those 102 students who won their school geography bees and qualified by their test score. The contestants came from every area of Pennsylvania. Gianna did very well in the preliminary round earning a score of 7 out of a possible score of 8. However, 17 other contestants scored 8 out of 8 and those students advanced to the semi-final and final rounds. Gianna and her family stayed to support and cheer on the finalists and to see the top three finalists receive their awards.
Gianna is an avid geography whiz, and she plans to use her experience from this year’s bee as motivation to make the state geography bee in 2019 and 2020. She aspires to win the state bee to represent Pennsylvania at the Washington D.C. National Geography Bee held in May of each year.
Congratulations Gianna on a wonderful effort and for representing Moravian Academy so well at the 2018 Pennsylvania State Geography Bee! We are…MA Proud!
