Kira Gobes, a Lehigh University senior computer science and IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Sciences) major, visited Moravian Academy Middle School on Friday, April 20th to meet with sixth, seventh and eighth graders during Science Club to share the ‘design thinking’ concept and her ‘Loop Smart Bracelet.’
She guided the students through the design thinking process to help them to understand and use the method. Students worked in small groups to quickly design an accessory for their partners. At first, students created an accessory design without having a defined goal in mind. As she worked with the kids, she helped them to understand the value of using the design thinking process to redesign their accessories.
Ms. Gobes then shared how she used this process to design a ‘smart bracelet’ known as ‘Loop’ to introduce kids to basic computer programming concepts. She also engaged the students by asking for their ideas to improve the bracelet. It was another learning moment for our students in attendance.
